There is a rumor that this Bussing was the cause of Heraklion shipsink in 1966 with more than 200 lost souls.
Heraklion was a former cargo ship converted to a ferry which was a common practice at that time. To convert it to a ferry, 2 doors were opened at the sides of the vessel . Cars and trucks were loaded from there.
Vessel left Chania harbour for Piraeus in the middle of a storm after had loaded vertically to the vessel and in a great rush a tri axle Bussing frigo truck . It seems that the truck was not roped properly and during the waving started to collide the door. Door was broken, truck fell into the sea and the ship started to take water and finally sank.
Waterproof construction of frigo and the load which was oranges prevent the truck from sinking, and some days later it was washed up to a small island where it was retrieved.
I was passing the yard that truck sits for more than 20 years, but only couple of years ago i was told the unbelievable story.
Cheers Costas
